SKIES are an electronic, emotive, indie pop trio from Adelaide, Australia composed of Dusty Stephensen (vox/guitar), Micah Cearns (synth/production) and Michael Zabolocki (bass/synth/production). Stylistically, the trio dabble between fragile falsetto and percussive rhythms to conjure up a thoroughly blended organic and electronic soundscape that is easily accessible to any listener. Their take on the current pop-driven electronic sound is complimented by layers of synth, reverb soaked guitars, punchy drums and vocal melodies layered with harmonies that are uniquely characteristic of the trio.
Dusty Stephenson and Micah Cearns initially started SKIES as a duo, fusing Dusty’s love for blues, roots and folk styles with Micah's talent for electronic music production to create their first single, 'Flames'. It clocked over 20K plays on Soundcloud in just a week after reaching the Australian and international blogosphere. Since that release, they invited Michael Zabolocki to complete the mix with his extensive knowledge of production and multi instrumental abilities. Follow up singles ‘What I Did Before’ and ‘Call For My Heart’ were released early and mid 2015, respectively, also gaining worldwide attention. Both of which showcase tantalising melodies, pulsating percussion, and vocal harmonies that blend blissfully with their sonic arrangements. ‘Call For My Heart’ scored the trio national airplay on independent radio stations all around the country including Triple J, and was complimented with stirling reviews by many of its presenters.
On the 17th of August, 2015, the trio’s most recent single, ‘Too Young’ was premiered on American website Indie Shuffle. The single is a big step forward for the band and has quickly been tipped to be their strongest release to date. It has already gained regular rotation on Triple J Unearthed and has been regarded highly by multiple local and international music websites.
"Melodies glide easily like honey down my throat. Looking forward to hearing more from you dudes!” - Linda Marigliano, Triple J
”Opening with some spoken word samples before swelling into a rich mash of influences held together by one of the sweetest falsetto filled vocal melodies Chet Faker never wrote, the track is one of SKIES’ most accomplished releases to date.” - Ripitup
“another stellar release from SKIES, whose ability to write melodic yet emotive arrangements is sure to see them fast-tracked as Australia's next big thing". - Indie Shuffle
SKIES have not only caused a wave with their home studio releases but 2015 has also seen them impressing large audiences with their dynamic captivating live show. The addition of their live drummer, Matt Birkin adds punch and brings the eclectic sounds to life. Since their first live inception, SKIES have supported a diverse list of artists at sold out shows including the likes of Safia, The Kite String Tangle, Peking Duk, George Maple, Crooked Colours, Timberwolf and Northeast Party House. Their upcoming calendar includes a performance at the Adelaide showcase at BigSound in Brisbane, their EP launch at Rocket Bar & Rooftop on September 18th as well as local supports for Meg Mac (sold out) and Surahn (DFA Records/Empire of The Sun) and performances at Marksenfest and the SA Music Awards ceremony.
“Locals SKIES were the first to make their impression upon the sold-out crowd and did so with charisma and sex appeal” - themusic.com.au
In August, SKIES were fortunate enough to be officially announced as one of 2015’s recipients of the Arts SA Robert Stigwood Fellowship. The previous year saw artists such as Tkay Maidza and Bad Dreems further their careers drastically through funding and development offered via the program. SKIES will be working closely with Stu Macqueen (Wonderlick entertainment) and the Music Development Office of South Australia to see that 2016 will be a massive year for the band.
SKIES independantly release their debut (self titled) EP digitally via their Young Muscle management on August 31st, 2015.
‘Call For My Heart’ is the first single of young Adelaide band SKIES’ debut EP, a 4 minute drum-driven affair coated in vocalist Dusty Stephensen’s intensely captivating falsetto.
'Too Young' still maintains that pop-driven melody and instrumentation that you hear in the other tracks on our debut EP, however it pushes on new boundaries. It displays a new direction that SKIES are moving in, away from the purely midi-driven sounds and towards a stronger blend of organic and electronic sounds. You can really hear this through the incorporation of live drums, percussion and analogue synths in this track.
